What websites learn from it

  • Roughly where you are: your country, and usually your city.
  • Which company connects you to the internet.
  • That it's you again when you come back from the same IP.

What is an IP address?

It's the number your internet provider gives your connection so websites know where to send data. Every site and app you connect to sees it, and IP databases map it to a rough location and to the company that owns it.

IPv4 or IPv6?

IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42. IPv6 addresses are longer, like 2001:db8::1. Many connections have both; this page shows the one our server saw for this visit.

How to hide your IP address

A VPN sends your traffic through one of its servers, so websites see the server's address and location instead of yours. Your internet provider can still see that you're connected to a VPN, but not the sites you visit. With the VPN on, run the WebRTC leak test to make sure your browser doesn't give your real IP away.

Common questions

Can someone find my home address from my IP?

Not from the IP alone. IP location databases usually stop at the city, and they're often off by miles. Your internet provider knows which customer used an IP at a given time, but it shares that only with legal process.

Why is the location wrong?

IP location comes from databases that map address ranges to places. Mobile networks, office networks and VPNs often route through another city or country, so the result shows where the network is, not where you are.

Does my IP address change?

Usually, yes. Most home and mobile connections get an address that changes from time to time, for example when your router restarts. Switching to a VPN or another Wi-Fi network changes it right away.

Is this lookup private?

This page shows the address our server sees for your visit and looks up its location in a database on our own server. It doesn't ask for your name, email or account.

What is an internet provider (ISP)?

The company that connects you to the internet, such as your broadband or mobile carrier. It owns the IP address you're using.
